There are the people who like a nice-chord, relatively pop-sounding song from a band - Therapy, for instance - and say, "wow it's nice", and tell everyone to go listen to it. Then they start checking out other songs from the same band, or their friends recommend other songs to them, and they listen and they like those other songs too, and they decide they're fans of the band, because their music is pretty nice, it's catchy and the lyrics are great. They even tweet "#nowplaying" or some of the lyrics, so other people may think they have decent or cool taste in music.
Then there are the people like us.
The people who don't just appreciate music, we are in love with it. We are the people who teether on the thin line between passion and obsession. We are the people who feel this unexplainable joy that nothing else in life can give you when we hear a guitar riff we love so much, or when we feel the pounding of the bass when our music is turned up so loud we can't hear anything else. We know every word, every riff, we play air guitar, we play air drums.
We are the people who wish they could forget about life and just sit in a corner of their room and listen to music all day long. We would often rather be alone with our music than go talk to other people. We love riding in buses alone, just staring out the window listening to music.
We would give anything to hear our favourite bands perform live. We are the people who buy all kinds of band merch and albums. We love music because it takes us to places life can't, and because it has always been there for us.
And you wonder why we look at all these mainstream people and hate that they like the songs that are our lives. Because they will never feel the way we do about music.
